The Supreme Court has issued a key order upholding the government's provision of jobs to the families of the victims of the rally stampede in Tamil Nadu's Karur last September in which 41 people were killed. A two-judge bench comprising Justice JB Parthiwala and Justice K. Vinod Chandran stayed the cancellation order passed earlier by the Madras High Court.
Commenting on this occasion, the bench said, "When the life is lost in an unfortunate incident, if the only earner in the family dies, no one can question the government's desire to give a job based on their qualifications. This is a policy decision of the government."It issued notices to the respondents explaining that under Article 162 of the Constitution, the government has the right to rehabilitate the disaster victims.
